for all participants

The welcome reception and the main colloquium will take place in the main building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, MTA), at Széchenyi István tér 9, 1051 Budapest, on the Pest side (eastern end) of Lánchíd/Chain bridge/Kettenbrücke.

The conference dinner will be on a boat (it won’t be moving), close to the conference venue. There will be a smörgåsbord type dinner with unlimited drinks from a selected drink menu.

The five workshops are hosted by the Department of English Linguistics at Eötvös Loránd University, a 20-minute walk from the Academy building to the south at Rákóczi út 5, 1088 Budapest.

printing posters, copying handouts

We cannot undertake copying handouts. One side of an A4 sheet costs about 4–5 eurocents in local copyshops. We expect about 160 participants for the main session. The syntax workshop has over 80 participants, the others about 50 to 60, the PTA workshop about 40. We can add links to your handout, poster, slideshow in the programme. If you cannot store it elsewhere, we can upload it for you and link it.

Printing an A0 poster costs from about €20 in local copyshops. Here’s a brief list of copyshops near the workshop and the main colloquium venues: printing_copying_GLOW41.

for speakers of the main colloquium

The ideal talk is 45 minutes followed by a 15-minute discussion. There will be a computer and projector in the room, if you wish to present a slideshow you can bring your USB stick, your laptop, or you may send your slideshow by email to us before the conference begins. Please notify us in advance if you need any further device.

for posters of the main colloquium

The poster boards fit A0 size portrait posters. An A0 landscape poster is postable but will stick out the edges a bit.

lightning talks

We are planning to have lightning talks at the beginning of both poster sessions. Here authors of posters may present their main claims in no more than 2 minutes. We propose that each poster is introduced by only one of its authors. The talks will follow the alphabetical order of the first author’s family name (as listed in the programme).

This brief presentation may be accompanied by one or two slides projected. If you wish to project slides during your lightning talk, please send them in A4 size landscape in PDF format to glow41bud-AT-gmail.com before 7 April. Slides sent in the wrong format and/or after the deadline will not be projected during your lightning talk.

getting to and staying in Bp

From BUD airport you may take the 100E bus to Deák Ferenc tér (halfway between the two venues) or the 200E bus, which is cheaper, but then you have to take the metro too. Read more…

You can also take the minibus service (about €16 to the centre), a taxi (about €22 to the centre, taxi fares are expected to rise in the near future, so add a couple of euros), or a four-hour walk (for free).

You can plan your journeys within Budapest with BKK Futár (to the main colloquium venue, to the workshops venue: enter your starting point in box A) or Google. Here’s a list of ticket types and prices, if you travel around a lot, the “5/30 BKK 24-hour travelcard” might be the best option. Getting a Budapest Card also allows you free use of public transportation, but it encourages you to miss out (parts of) the conference ☺

There’s plenty of hotels and hostels in the area and various online booking services are at your disposal. Anything in the 5th or 1st districts is within walking distance. The inner parts of the 13th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 2nd districts should also be near enough. (Postal codes contain district numbers as their 2nd and 3rd digits: 1051 is in the 5th, 1088 is in the 8th district.)

The currency in Hungary is not the Euro. If you want to exchange cash, there are plenty of exchange offices in the city. These usually offer much better rates than those at the airport or railway stations. In most places you can use a bankcard too, so you may survive without cash.

Please register at your earliest convenience but by 1 April the latest.

The registration fee is €80/HUF24800. This includes a welcome reception (Tue 10 Apr), the main colloquium (Wed 11 Apr–Fri 13 Apr) and any of the five workshops on Tue 10 Apr and Sat 14 Apr. The fee does not include lunch and dinner or accommodation. Note that students, unemployed, and retired colleagues may get a discount and pay €50/HUF15500.

The conference dinner on Fri 13 Apr costs €40/HUF12400.

If you transferred the fee to the above account we must issue an invoice. So please supply the name and address of the payer in the registration form.

After 1 April you can pay on site in cash. In this case we can either issue an invoice or give you a simple receipt.

We will ask you about the workshops you plan to attend, this is so that we can provide adequately sized rooms for the events. There is no extra fee for any of the workshops.

The main colloquium has no specific theme so scholars are invited to submit unpublished papers within all areas of generative linguistics. We are planning significant poster sessions, too. Submissions on phonological topics are especially welcome. The workshops have their own topic and expect papers relating to them.

An author may be associated with a maximum of two abstracts submitted to the main colloquium, only one of which may be single authored. The same abstract may not be submitted to both the main colloquium and a workshop. However, the same person may submit two different single-authored abstracts to the main colloquium and a workshop.

Abstracts for the main colloquium and workshops are to be submitted via Easychair. Please note that the main colloquium and the four regular workshops each have their own submission site, for the latter check the workshop’s page. No abstract may be longer than 2 pages (A4 or letter size) with 1in margins, set single spaced in a 12pt font. This includes displays and references (which may be set in a smaller font). Abstracts must be anonymous, self references should be avoided. Please make sure that there is no indication of the authors’ identity in the file submitted. (Files uploaded to Easychair are renamed by the system, but a PDF file may contain hidden information about its author or creator.)

The deadline for submitting abstracts is noon UTC, 16 November.

Here’s some help if you’re unfamiliar with Easychair:

  1. If you want to submit an abstract to the main colloquioum, go to:
    https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=glow41. If you want to submit an abstract to one of the workshops, please follow the link given on the workshop’s page.
  2. If you do not have an existing EasyChair account, click on “sign up for an account”. You will be asked to fill in a simple form to create an account.
  3. Click “New Submission” at the top of the page.
  4. Enter author information in the provided fields. Tick the “Corresponding Author” box for all authors who wish to receive email correspondences or notifications.
  5. Enter your title in the “Title” field.
  6. Enter at least three keywords.
  7. For main colloquium only: Specify whether you want your abstract to be considered only for a talk or for a poster presentation as well.
  8. Upload your abstract. Only .pdf files will be accepted. Do not include your name or affiliation in the abstract/file name!
  9. Click “Submit”. You will be taken to a summary page of your submission — this is your confirmation that it has been saved.
  10. You may update your submission until the deadline by logging in and clicking on “My Submissions”.
