To get to and around in Frankfurt am Main, we highly recommend to install the apps.
on your smartphone. The local and the long distance transport in Frankfurt and Germany is fragile at the moment. Canceled trains and delays are highly common. Both apps can show you alternative connections and you can also buy tickets if you register.
Getting around in Frankfurt
To get around in Frankfurt, we recommend to use the RMVgo App on your smartphone. You can enter the address of your target location and get suggestions how to get there from your current location. Please note that Germany has a trust-based system. You can get on any train or bus without a physical barrier, but there are random check ups by security. If you are caught without ticket, you pay 60 EUR.
If you buy tickets via the app, you need to show the ticket QR-Code at the security control. If you buy a paper ticket at a ticket machine, you need to validate the ticket inside the train (machine looks like a simple time clock).
Typical ticket prices:
Ticket type | German name | Price | Conditions |
short-distance ticket | Kurzstreckenfahrkarte | 2.35 EUR | length of trip < 2 km, one direction only, you may switch trains/busses, but don’t do a round trip |
single ticket | Einzelfahrkarte | 3.80 EUR | go one direction within Frankfurt, you may switch trains/busses, but don’t do a round trip |
day ticket | Tageskarte | 7.40 EUR | have as many trips as you want at that day until 7am of the following day, saves money already if you take two trips a day |
group day ticket | Gruppentageskarte | 14.10 EUR (for up to 5 people) | up to 5 people can share this ticket for one day (until the end of transfer of that day), saves money already with 2 people; you have to write the names of the people on the ticket and only those people can use it (show your ID/passport with the security) |
